New Recipe # 43
Baked Chicken with Onions, Potatoes, Garlic, and Thyme - 3/5
I bought a 3-pack of whole chickens at Costco, so the next two recipes use the chickens, cut up into 6-8 pieces (skin on, bone in). This first recipe looks fancier than it tastes. I enjoyed it, especially how moist the chicken ended up, but Steve felt that it missed the mark on flavour. Perhaps adding a nice sauce would fix that problem!
Fancy looking!
New Recipe #44
Crispy Mustard-Roasted Chicken - 3/5
This was an interesting dish, but there were two problems: it smelled way too strongly as it cooked (and for some time afterwards), and it was also too salty. Obviously it would be easy to fix the saltiness, but I'm not sure how to fix the smell! The good part: chicken was moist again! I'm really liking baked chicken lately.
New Recipe #45
Alton Brown's Hollandaise Sauce - 4/5
Steve wanted a Hollandaise sauce with his salmon, so he decided to make his own. The first recipe he tried (months ago) ended in a huge gloppy mess. But this recipe had more success! The sauce had a good flavour (I put it on my salmon burger). The only problem is that it was slightly too thin. Steve tried the recipe again not too long ago, and by increasing the temperature of the water a bit, he fixed the consistency problem. Yay!
New Recipe #46
Julia Child Hash Browns - 4/5
Our hash browns ended up a bit on the moist side, but otherwise they were great! We're going to adjust the oil/butter measurements and try these again. I love browned potatoes!
New Recipe #47
Meatballs with Kale - 4/5
This recipe is actually called "Veal Meatballs with Mustard Greens", but we used beef instead of veal, and kale instead of mustard greens. We also didn't have 'fresh bread crumbs' on hand so we substituted with panko. The meat mixture was a bit moist, but overall it was a good dish. The kale went very well with it.
New Recipe #48
Chinese Sweet and Sour Pork - 2/5
Too many things went wrong with this dish, from flavour to texture. Maybe it's because we didn't have all the necessary ingredients (e.g. black Chinese vinegar), maybe it's because we didn't deep fry the pork (we opted for pan-frying instead). Regardless, this dish was a miss! Note to self: pieces of sliced ginger are far too strong in a bite.
