COVID-19 - Week 11 (Killer the Snake)

Our snake adventures have begun! On the day after Jessi's birthday, we caught our very first one: a brown and black Northern Water Snake. We found "Killer" at a nearby creek and caught her using my 'two nets' technique.

First catch!

Meet "Killer"

Jessi did a bit of research on how to tell a snake's gender -- something about the thickness of their tail (thin = female). So we think that Killer is a female. Once Killer was all settled in to her temporary home, Emily and Jessi spent a lot of time doing this:

Killer was so fun to observe! Every time we peeked into the room she was in a different spot.

On the second day, Jessi had the task of spot cleaning the terrarium and replacing the water in her dish.

Nice, clean water for you!

We also tried feeding Killer a worm by hanging it on a skewer and dangling it in front of her. Unfortunately she wasn't interested (and we later found out that worms are not really on this particular species' diet).

Since she wasn't eating, we decided it would be best to set her free the following day (kept her for a total of two days). Jessi shed a few tears, but the rest of the 'releasing' experience was very positive! Killer reacted right away when we arrived at the place where we found her and she seemed so happy when she slithered away.

Good bye!

Deep contemplation

Killer will forever be remembered as the first snake we caught and cared for! Have a great life, K!

And all is not lost, because today we caught our second snake: a common Garter snake. We found "Clicker" by searching around the neighbourhood retention pond. Probably another female, she is small, wiggly, and cute! We love how much she sticks out her tongue.

Emily and Jessi have been keeping a Snake Journal, recording everything from dates to species, names, and observations. Pretty sweet!

Hello Clicker!
I hope you enjoy your stay at the Snake Hotel

Jessi's 9th Birthday!

We had two wonderful days of celebrating Jessi turning 9! The first was on Sunday with an outdoor gathering at my parents'. The weather was perfect for a picnic and water play.

On the morning of Jessi's birthday, Emily and I woke up early to prepare her presents. The big surprise was a "Snake Hotel": a terrarium with accessories so that Jessi could catch snakes and care for them for a few days before releasing them back. We figured this would be a good compromise to her dream of owning a pet snake!

All ready for the reveal

Emily, Lemmy and I woke Jessi up so that she could start the day with some Lemmy cuddles! Then it was time for birthday pancakes and presents.

One of Jessi's presents was a large printed photo of Lemmy, but unfortunately due to the postal delays we didn't get the picture in time! So a "Coming Soon" notice would have to suffice:

Surprise! Yay!

Enjoying her gift from Lorelei & Caleb

For a few months now, Jessi had been saving up to buy herself an iPad, just like her sister did at Christmas. Thanks to birthday money gifts, she finally had enough! Daddy went out and got it for her:

In the afternoon Jessi and I went out for her traditional birthday ice cream and amazingly, when we checked the mail, her Lemmy photo had arrived!! What timing.

Last but not least, the growth chart and Mommy-Jessi picture were updated.

A pretty sweet birthday! The only thing missing this year was a party with her friends. We are just planning to delay the party for when things return to normal.

Happiest of Birthdays, Jessica!
We love you so much! xox
