Final Field Trip

A week before Emily's graduation, the girls went on their last field trip of the school year. This was a bigger-than-usual trip for the graduating class, but it also included Jessi's 6/7 class. Steve and I were parent volunteers and we all headed to Brockville to see the old Railway Tunnel and do some Treetop Trekking.

It turns out that trekking in treetops is not Jessi's thing. It's very high and wobbly! Fortunately she brought her crochet kit and hung out with the few other kids who were also not fans.

The last part of the field trip was supposed to be a stop at the ONroute so that kids could buy some dinner/treats, but due to delays and poor planning, it didn't happen. The kids were pretty bummed out about it, so I took the girls and a couple of their friends out for a quick treat when we got back. Altogether a fun adventure and a great way to celebrate the end of the school year.

Also that week: the very last Hot Lunch at the school! I've been running the Hot Lunch program there for over 5 years. Now it's time to pass the torch on to someone else.

School Events

May and June have been such busy months at the girls' school! On top of the Charlotte's Web performances, there have been field trips, art projects, sports, and end-of-year events, all of which we've been heavily involved in.

First up was a field trip to Gould Lake with Emily's class. It was a hot and buggy day, but the kids managed to have fun playing a herbivore/omnivore/carnivore tag game, learning to use a compass, and hiking through the woods.

Jessi's class went to Gould Lake two days later with Steve as the parent volunteer. They learned to paddle canoes and made their way to an island for a picnic lunch, followed by some swimming in the lake. If only Steve had taken some pictures!

What we did get pictures of was Jessi's participation at the school board's Track & Field event. Jessi competed in the triple jump and ran the 1200m and 800m races. This was a first for our typically-non-athletic family and was fun to watch!

Also over the past several weeks I helped two classes create collaborative artwork to sell at the art auction for our End-of-Year Celebration. I can't even say how many hours I spent on these projects. It was definitely a labour of love.

The End-of-Year Celebration event was last Thursday, and it was a big hit! I was in charge of food/drink sales. There was also face painting, crafts, music, blow-up games, and the art auction.

One more item that has kept us busy since the start of May: Steve and I have been coaching Ultimate Frisbee with Emily's class! Our daily practices include drills and lessons on techniques and rules. We've seen plenty of improvement in the students' abilities and look forward to seeing if it translates to the games in next week's tournament. 

And the busyness isn't over yet. On top of gearing up for the school board's Ultimate Frisbee tournament, there's also the big grade 6/7/8 end-of-year field trip and the grade 8 graduation (hello, decorating committee!). We are definitely ending our time at Holsgrove PS with a bang.
